Long Term Plan update: September 6 2019

General actions and activities

This week saw a press briefing day at Sowenna on Friday, 6 Sept ahead of the formal opening of the new unit later in the month. The opening of the new 14 bed unit means that children and adolescents will have access to specialist mental health beds in the Duchy. This project delivers on NHS England’s commitment to reduce out of area placements for children and young people by increasing bed numbers nationally by 10 percent. More information about the new unit is available on its website:  sowenna.cornwallft.nhs.uk

Reports on the development of the Long Term Plan were presented at the NHS Kernow, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. There was also an update provided to members of the Cornwall Council Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee during the discussion on the Health and Wellbeing Strategy; a LTP discussion during the system leadership team meeting, and a system leaders meeting with MPs.

Work is continuing on developing the Mental Health Strategy for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.  Members at the Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee held on Wednesday 4 September were invited to provide feedback on the draft Strategy which was launched at the HealthWatch conference in May. This was part of a wider programme of formal consultation on the draft Strategy which will be continuing during the next few months.  The feedback will then be used to amend the final Strategy later this year. Click here to read the papers.

The communications group is amending the presentation materials for the consultation and activities following the feedback from the workshop sessions and meetings. Once the final version has been agreed the group will be producing posters and leaflets to support the planned events and activities.  Work is also continuing on creating an online survey to obtain feedback from the public on key areas of the LTP.  Once this has been produced it will be promoted in the media and with the support of Healthwatch and via staff bulletins.
