Back in April 2019 Cornwall Council asked the community to nominate someone over the age of 60 who was inspiring in some way, recognising that age is just a number and that people are living in our community who go above and beyond every day, who don’t let age be a limiting factor for them.Today Cornwall Council is joining in with the global and growing #AgeProud movement. This campaign aims to challenge outdated notions around ageism and champion a more positive and realistic view of ageing.
Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for adults Rob Rotchell said: “Unfortunately we don’t often take the time to thank or appreciate those people in our community who are getting older. Society often looks down on us as we age, however, we need to recognise that older people have a wealth of wisdom and experience that we need to draw on.
“Quite often older people are the ones that look after their grandchildren so their parents can go out to work, they also volunteer and support those that are less fortunate in our society. I’m very proud of the older community here in Cornwall and the 60 over 60 finalists are just a cross section of those people who make the effort to keep active, volunteer, keep up with their hobby and generally show the world that there’s plenty of life left in them yet!”
The 60 over 60 finalists have been put into 5 categories which recognises their contribution. These are:
• Cultural Contributors
• Community Champions
• Everyday Heroes
• Health Crusaders
• Volunteer Superstars
One of the ‘Health Crusaders’, Karrie Fox who regularly takes part in Triathlons and is a dedicated member of the Cornwall Search and Rescue Team said: I never even consider my age, I think you have to rip up the rule book on what you think you should be at your age, you can take up new things, its ok. Just take on anything, don’t be shy, just join up, just go, just do it!”
All of the finalists have been invited to a special event at County Hall in Truro at the end of the month where their achievements will be celebrated. You can find out more about their stories on www.cornwall.gov.uk/60over60
Nominations for next year’s round of 60 over 60 will open in Spring 2020.
